It’s probably just coincidence but this could be an important piece of the puzzle…. South Carolina has seen growing interest in smart city initiatives, with a few cities actively engaging in projects to integrate advanced technology and data-driven solutions to improve urban living. Based on the most recent developments: Myrtle Beach: This coastal city formally launched its smart city initiative in September 2024, establishing itself as a notable participant in South Carolina. Myrtle Beach is running a “living lab” public-private partnership program to test and develop emerging technologies. The initiative includes four initial participants— Cocoflo, Rep’d, Polco, and Dependbuild—focused on integrating these technologies into municipal operations. The city aims to use Myrtle Beach as a hub for tech innovation, with feedback from these deployments shaping future expansions. Greenville: Recognized as one of South Carolina’s fastest-growing cities, Greenville has been exploring smart city concepts for some time. In 2019, it hosted a meeting with the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) to discuss how local governments can leverage technology to thrive. While not as formalized as Myrtle Beach’s recent launch, Greenville has been steadily adopting smart solutions, particularly in traffic management and resident services, reflecting its proactive approach to staying ahead in the technology curve. These two cities stand out as the most prominently involved in smart city initiatives in South Carolina based on recent activities. Myrtle Beach’s structured program marks it as a leader in this space within the state, while Greenville’s efforts indicate a broader interest in smart technology adoption. Other cities in South Carolina may be exploring similar concepts, but no widespread, formalized initiatives beyond these have been widely documented as of this date.
